The global economy is facing yet another major shock. The conflict in the Middle East has caused sharp increases in energy prices, reignited inflationary pressures, and strengthened expectations that monetary policy will be tightened.
Before the conflict erupted, global economic activity appeared to be on a solid footing, supported by strong growth in some major economies and global trade that was outperforming expectations; this was driven in part by robust growth in exports of artificial intelligence (AI)-related technology and a slight decline in tariff levels. However, this conflict has led to a marked deterioration in the global outlook, with approximately two-thirds of the world’s economies now facing weaker growth prospects..
